Interview #1: Wizdom

March 31st, 2009 | Category: Namsayin

“Wizdom has prided himself on hard work and perseverance. These principles have granted him accolades on the West Coast, with special recognition in the Seattle area. It’s only a matter of time before the Seattle MC’s infectious flow blows up the hip-hop market.”
- Elliott Townsend of Urb Magazine’s Next 1000

“Wizdom is the voice, and being from Seattle, one can say that Music: Soul Of The Man represents Seattle hip-hop at its finest. Epidemmik is the producer, and being from D.C., one can say that the album represents D.C. at its finest. As a unit, the album represents rap music at its best. The soul of hip-hop is dead? Not if Wizdom and Epidemmik have a say in things.”
- John Book of okayplayer and The Run-Off Groove

Namsayin:Wizdom thanks for giving namsayin.com the opportunity to interview you, after all we’ve been there since the beginning.

Wizdom: I appreciate the time homie!

Namsayin: SO…first off where does the name come from?
how did u select that name?

Wizdom: The name was given to me by a good friend in high school. We were in chemistry class not paying attention but coming up with the best 2 or 4 bar spits. I would always come up with some wild type ish, and he told me that he was gonna call me Wizdom cause I always had something that made you think about the meaning. Basically he said I was droppin’ wisdom, so it stuck.

Namsayin: thats wassup…..lyrically, there’s only a handful of cats in Seattle that really focus on there lyrics. Some just want to make a ill club banger…..how did u get your feet wet?

Wizdom: It has to do with my musical upbrining. I listened to all sorts of music growing up, and I was always interested in what the artist had to say. It was amazing to me when someone like John Lennon, 2Pac, Paul Simon, etc. could convey something so powerful in a song. So when I started to write it was more of a poetic way of expressing myself. I always wanted to be an artist that had a way with words, double meanings sometimes too, because to me, that is what makes a true musician.

Namsayin: I like how u always keep it to the essentials and its shown’ that you’ve grown and matured with your sophomore album…..WIZDOM & EPIDEMMIK: Music: Soul of a man.
Besides musical genius, who and or what influences you, the arts and your style.

Wizdom: I am inspired by all my family, friends and loved ones. It sounds corny but I take all that into the booth with me or when I perform. The support system I have is what allowed me to persue music further, because when you start out, those are the main fans you have. Building a fan base isn’t easy in the begining, and it is due to the love and support of those people that I was able to get to where I am now, and hopeully to even higher places in the future.

Namsayin: Word. That’s very respectful to say because tons of people lose hope and faith in one another due to the rough times. Switch off topic a bit, word is that you have a crazy fetish for sneakers…whats the deal? What you workin with?

Wizdom: oh boy haha, you know me too well… In high school and college I always wanted the dopest kicks, but I didn’t have the money to afford much of anything minus a couple pairs here and there. Once I got a fulltime job and got deeper into music I used that money to start quite the shoe collection. I am addicted, Nike Air Max, Jordans, some New Balances, Asics even, I can’t get enough. In fact I just copped these Air Max 95s in the Griffey colorway (grey/teal) that are fresh!
It is definitely an expensive habit, but I love it!

Namsayin: hahah whats your prized possession in your collection?

Wizdom: Wow…that is tuff, I would have to say my Nike Air Max 90 Infrareds, I got two pair so I can keep one pair clean at all times!

Namsayin
: cool….probably top 20 favorite haha.
What slang words you use on a regular. I dont know if your familiar with ours but we got a lil dictionary namsayin…we keep it tangken….do u keep it tangken?

Wizdom: homie! that is right up my alley. I use the FAM and BRO language all day! For example, if I am texting someone, I might be like, “BRO.J. Simpson, get at me when you can FAMerican Gangster, gotta talk about this show. Holler at ya boyscoutt” Things like that, it is fun, Barak BRObama…Walter FrancBRO………..so on and so on haha

Namsayin: hahahahahaha thats nice. Real solid….BRO J SIMPSON.
So what can we expect from wizdom in the next couple months? Years?

Wizdom
: There are big things planned! I am in the process of releasing an online only FREE ep, called, Bring it Back. It features one re-recorded track off my second album, one remix and five new songs featuring some of Seattle’s best and most talented producers and emcees. It will be releasing the same time as the new website drops, www.wizdomsound.com. In addition I am going to be shooting a video for, Bring it Back, very soon. Plus as always a lot of shows in the near future to stay busy and keep grinding.
Plus I will be working on my third studio album with my guy Epidemmik from the Washington DC area in late 2009, so stay tuned!

Namsayin: Be good to see you in action, jackson! Any last shout outs?

Wizdom
: Yea, I want to say thank you to namsayin.com for the support. I like what you are doing with the site, and let’s keep the movement going!
